[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Introduction & Function of the Divsion

The role of EP (MP) Desk is in contributing towards policy formulation of exports of marine products,  facilitating and and promoting exports of marine and allied / processed products. The Desk exercises administrative control over the Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA) and handles its budgetary, establishment, recruitment of its key posts such as Director , Secretary and Chairman. It also does correspondences with foreign Governments/Regulators , State Govts, Central /State govt organizations etc. MPEDA is governed by MPEDA Act, 1972 and is mandated to:

  • Promote the marine products exports from the country.
  • Promote and take all measures required for ensuring sustained, quality seafood exports from the country.

Schemes/Policy initiatives of MPEDA include:

  • Market Promotion.
  • Value Addition for Exports.
  • Fisheries and Aquaculture Improvement.
  • Quality Assurance.

The Government through MPEDA undertake many activities for export promotion by operating number of schemes aimed to assist the entire value chain in augmenting the production from capture and culture fisheries, preservation of quality, infrastructure development for value addition, preservation/storage of value added marine products, traceability, sustainability of the resources and promotion of Indian marine products in the global market.  For enhancing foreign trade in seafood sector, MPEDA undertakes market promotion schemes, which include Trade Fairs/Delegations, Virtual/Physical Buyer Seller Meets, Market Research & Intelligence and Brand Promotions.

Furthermore, the Department regularly monitors the Trade barriers (both Tariff & non-tariff) and takes up the issues through territorial divisions of Department of Commerce in consultation with MPEDA, Department of Fisheries, Export Inspection Council & all the concerned organizations promptly. MPEDA has also taken number of steps i.e. digitization of export certificates, release of COVID-19 protocol booklet/video/international TV commercial to sensitize the marine export industry, digitization of certificates, minimizing regulatory compliances burden and many more to counter the effects of trade barriers.

As a result of all such efforts, the export of Marine products has achieved highest ever export figures of USD 8.07 billion in the FY 2022-23. India’s seafood exports touched an all-time high in volume during the financial year 2023-24with 17,81,602 MT of seafood exported having worth of USD 7.38 billion despite various challenges in significant export markets.
