The G20 represents around 75% of global trade, 85% of global GDP and two third of global population. India held the G20 Presidency from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023, with the current Presidency resting with Brazil. Currently three emerging market economies (EMEs) – India, Brazil and South Africa form the Troika and will be holding the G20 Presidency in succession. This provides a significant opportunity to pursue inclusive agenda on trade and investment issues. India took over the G20 Presidency at a time as the world went through the after-effects of a disruptive once-in-a-century pandemic, conflicts and economic uncertainty.
Under the aegis of Indian presidency and our theme of ‘VasudhaivaKutumbakam’ or ‘One Earth One Family One Future’ we strived to highlight the importance of cooperation and collaboration among countries to mitigate continued challenges in the field of trade and investment and have forged consensus on concrete and action-oriented outcomes that upon implementation could spur global trade growth.

TIWG

The Trade and Investment Working Group (TIWG) under the Sherpa track was established in 2016 to address trade related issues and forge enhanced cooperation among G20 countries. Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department of Commerce, is the nodal ministry for TIWG.
Brazil assumed presidency from 01.12.2023, during its presidency the priorities being pursued by Brazil are a perfect mix as they have elements of continuity from the Indian G20 Presidency as well as contemporary emerging issues on prevalent global trade and investment issues.

Functions of G20 Cell

The G20 cell was established as a dedicated cell within DoC to steer the G20 TIWG under Indian Presidency. Furthermore, it also looks after and coordinates all the matters related to Trade and Investment Working Group (TIWG) of successive G20 Presidencies. Delegation from G20 cell took part in 1st TIWG meeting (virtually) held on 29-30th January, 2023 under Brazilian presidency and deliberated upon the TIWG priorities of the year discussed during the meeting.
